Socket to help local diabetes camp get ready for summer
Columbia, Mo.—A group of employees from Socket, a Missouri-based telephone and Internet service provider, will donate their time and talents to help get Camp Hickory Hill in tip-top shape for this summer’s season.
Socket’s Day of Caring at Camp Hickory Hill will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the camp’s location five miles off Highway E or Stadium Blvd in Columbia, Mo.
Camp Hickory Hill provides a unique opportunity for children ages eight to 17 living with type-one diabetes. Attending Camp Hickory Hill is about having fun, pure and simple. The camp offers a supportive, medically supervised environment where children have the opportunity to discover kindred spirits, empathize with one another, build self-confidence, and learn about managing their diabetes more independently. Each summer, more than 100 campers spend their days participating in a wide variety of exciting activities such as hiking, archery, boating, and swimming, with diabetes education and management mingled among daily events. Doctors, nurses and nutritionists are on-hand to help with both campers’ education and daily diabetes maintenance. Camp costs are on a sliding scale based on family income.
Socket’s volunteer team will spend a full day making certain the camp is in shape for the summer’s events. Among their tasks will be to clean and prepare 16 cabins, the dining hall and activity shed. They will also mount fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, visually inspect camp wiring, spread mulch around swing sets and the challenge course, ready the pool and deck, and more.
“I’m thrilled that Socket chose our camp for their Day of Caring,” said Ken Luraas, director of Camp Hickory Hill. “Our success each year totally depends on the generous donations of contributors and volunteers. We couldn’t offer this camp to these kids without folks like the Socket volunteers stepping up and lending a hand.”
